Protection from radiation exposure is depending on the type of radiation and energy. Alpha radiation for instance, is easily stopped by just a few centimeters of air whilst gamma radiation is highly penetrating and is most effectively shielded by heavy dense elements with high atomic numbers. A suitable element for shielding of gamma rays is lead with atomic number 82. For beta radiation the heavy element with high atomic number may not be as useful as in the case of gamma. The beta particles interact with the heavy nucleus and emitt bremsstrahlung. So the lighter elements are preferred. The neutrons are best shielded with high proton density, typically water.
